What is ketamine?
Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic used in human anesthesia and veterinary medicine. Dissociative drugs are hallucinogens that cause a person to feel detached from reality. Much of the ketamine sold on the street has been diverted from veterinarians’ offices. Ketamine’s chemical structure and mechanism of action are similar to those of PCP.

What are some slang terms?
Cat Tranquilizer, Cat Valium, Jet K, Kit Kat, Purple, Special K, Special La Coke, Super Acid, Super K, and Vitamin K

Ketamine is a precursor to PCP and was synthesized for the same purpose, as an anesthetic for use in surgeries. It can cause sedation and memory loss as a side effect and was later restricted to veterinary use. Its recreational use causes similar effects to PCP and it, too, has a low to moderate addiction potential.

What does ketaine look like?
Although it is manufactured as an injectable liquid, in illicit use ketamine is generally evaporated to form a powder.

How is ketamine used?
Ketamine is snorted or swallowed. It is odorless and tasteless, so it can be added to beverages without being detected, and it induces amnesia. Because it has been used to commit sexual assaults due to its ability to sedate and incapacitate unsuspecting victims, ketamine is also considered to be a “date rape” drug.

What do young people hear about ketamine?
Ketamine can cause dream-like states and hallucinations. People who use the drug report sensations ranging from a pleasant feeling of floating to being separated from their bodies.

What are the risks of using ketamine?
Some ketamine experiences involve a terrifying feeling of almost complete sensory detachment that is likened to a near-death experience. These experiences, similar to a “bad trip” on LSD, are called the “K-hole.” Low-dose intoxication from ketamine results in impaired attention, learning ability, and memory. In high doses, ketamine can cause delirium, amnesia, impaired motor function, high blood pressure, depression, and potentially fatal respiratory problems.

Flashbacks have been reported several weeks after ketamine is used. Prolonged use may also cause agitation, depression, cognitive difficulties, unconsciousness, and amnesia.

For Anesthesia: “I had ketamine used in conjunction with propofol after a failed procedure with just propofol where I woke up mid way through it. It was the best anesthetic I have ever had. I stayed asleep throughout the whole procedure, had no hangover after, and it also kept my pain at bay. The only side effect was that it burned like fire going in, but it works so quickly that only last maybe 5 seconds.”

For Not Listed / Other: “After spending thousands on therapy and meds in attempts to function with my debilitating Complex PTSD. The doctor recommended the standard 6 treatments but said some of her patients only need 4, and we would know by 4 if I was responding. I did mine very close together, within a week, and it changed my life. I stopped having nightmares, fatigue, disassociation. I was able to retain new information again and be more productive at work and school. I got a booster at 3 months (which we expected since I didn’t need all 6 initially) and she feels I may not need another for 6 months bc I’ve responded so well. I don’t love the trip during the infusion as I tend to get a little motion sick but she administers zofran before starting the ketamine. I know it doesn’t work for everyone but literally nothing else worked for me so I’m glad I found what did. If I had stopped after 1 or 2 I would not think it had worked. For me, stopping after 1 or 2 would have been a waste of money.”
